Did the Death of the Author Kill the Critic?
If everyone’s interpretation of the artwork is equally valid, and yet this elasticity of meaning is also captured and commodified within the creative economy, then has criticism been assimilated by the status quo and can culture itself still operate as a site of contestation? Furthermore, if everyone is an artist, have art making, spectatorship and criticism become equivalent? These questions will be tested against the recent contestation of artworks sited amidst the fierce political struggles of urban regeneration zones. |
