Crisis Management

Thirty years after the publication of Critique of Cynical Reason we could say that critique––or at the very least the critique of art––is not so much going through tedious times as willing itself out of existence. This paper looks at the interval in mainstream Western art criticism that goes from the 2002 October “Roundtable on The Present Conditions of Art Criticism” (the swansong of a once-dominant North American critical “model”) to a recent flurry of publications that either continue to situate criticism (or even “judgment”) at a point of crisis, propose some modified form of it (as, say, “criticality” or “post-criticism”) or attempt to move out of a critical paradigm altogether. It asks, both what has changed and what has remained intact through these iterations and, more importantly, whether any of them is able to occupy itself with something more radical than managing its own crisis.
