João Fernandes é Vice-Director e Curador Principal do Museu Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia (Madrid). Foi Director do Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Serralves entre Fevereiro de 2003 e Outubro de 2012 e seu Vice-Director desde 1996 até Janeiro de 2003. Entre 1992 e 1996, trabalhou como curador independente, período em que organizou três edições do Festival de Arte Contemporânea do Porto e fez a curadoria de várias exposições em Portugal, Espanha e França. Foi o curador das representações de Portugal na 1ª Bienal de Arte de Joanesburgo (1995), na 24ª Bienal de São Paulo (1998), e na 50ª Bienal de Veneza (2003), em colaboração com Vicente Todolí. Publicou os seus textos em vários catálogos e participou em júris, seminários e mesas redondas em diversas instituições académicas e artísticas.

João Fernandes Deputy Director and Chief Curator of Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia (Madrid). He has served between February 2003 and October 2012 as Director of the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, where he served as Deputy Director from 1996 until January 2003. Between 1992 and 1996, he worked as a “free-lance” curator, organizing three editions of the Oporto Contemporary Art Festival and curating several exhibitions in Portugal, Spain and France.
He curated the Portuguese representations in the 1st Johannesburg Art Biennale (1995), the 24th São Paulo Art Biennial (1998), and the 50th Venice Bienniale (2003), in collaboration with Vicente Todolí. He published his texts in several catalogues, and he participated in numerous juries, seminaries and round tables in various artistic and academic institutions. |
