Curatorial positions: the case of Spirit of Utopia
The more we demand a critical stance from contemporary art, the more contemporary art seems to affirm the world it criticises. Put differently, art must be critical of the world inasmuch as the system within it functions follows the dictates of global cultural capitalism. How do curating practices respond to this state of affairs? Drawing on the exhibition A Spirit of Utopia, Whitechapel Gallery, London 2012, I will discuss the curatorial methodology deployed during the making of the exhibition, from conception to production. The WG attempted to mirror a process which was, on the one hand, open-ended and collective and, on the other, formally structured. To achieve this, the curators were invited to entwine the exhibition-making process with the exhibition concept: i.e. collective artistic proposals that formulated concrete solutions to social and economic problems worldwide. |
